Independent Contractors (1099 Shifts)

For income earned through Instawork as an independent contractor (i.e., on 1099 shifts), Instawork does not automatically withhold taxes or other deductions from your pay. Since you’re providing your services as an independently established business, you're responsible for reporting and paying all taxes as may be required by federal, state, and/or local regulations.

Provided you earned $600 or more on 1099 shifts in 2023, here’s what you should know:

  • Instawork will provide you with an IRS Form 1099-NEC on or before February 1, 2024.

  • You will receive an email that your 1099 is ready to be accessed at the email address associated with your Pro account via tax1099.com.

  • Please click on the link in the email to access your Form 1099.

If you DID NOT earn $600 or more in 2023 with your 1099 shifts, Instawork WILL NOT send you a Form 1099-NEC. However, even if you don’t receive a tax form from Instawork, you still may be required to file and/or pay taxes.

If you have questions about your potential tax obligations, please consult a tax professional. Additionally, for more information about filing taxes as an independent contractor, visit the IRS website.

AWS Employees (W2 Shifts)

For income earned through Instawork as an employee of Advantage Workforce Services (i.e., on W2 shifts), your weekly pay stubs already reflect the required withholdings.

By February 1, 2024, Professionals who worked W2 shifts will receive instructions on how to obtain an electronic IRS Form W2 via your ADP portal.

Professionals will need to file the W2 with their tax returns.

Ensure your personal information is up-to-date

In order to ensure correct reporting, your Instawork account must have:

  • a valid social security number

  • complete mailing address

  • valid email address (to receive the forms)

FAQs

Can you re-issue tax forms for me?

If you cannot locate your tax forms, please first check your spam folder. If you're still having issues, contact Support via the app.

Additionally, for information regarding income earned on W2 shifts, you can always access your Form W2 via your ADP portal, starting in February 2024.

I worked both 1099 and W2 shifts. What should I expect?

If you used Instawork to provide your services as both an independent contractor (1099) and an employee of AWS (W2), you should receive both an IRS Form 1099-NEC (provided you earned at least $600 on 1099 shifts) and W2. Please file your taxes with both forms when reporting earnings made through the Instawork platform.
